WhatsApp Coexistence: what changes on the app and how to go back

"If I connect my number, what do I lose?" It is the question that stops most professionals. Here is the full list, and at the end the part nobody mentions.

What it is

Meta's official mode that lets the same number work at once on the WhatsApp Business app on your phone and on the API that powers the assistant. You do not change number, you do not lose your chats, you keep replying by hand whenever you want.

In practice you keep managing clients from your phone, exactly as you always have. You do not have to learn a web console and you do not have to keep a computer switched on to reply to whoever writes: the app stays your working tool, and the assistant handles the messages while you are with a client or after hours.

What keeps working, identical to today

Contacts, group chats, voice and video calls, statuses, catalogue, orders, labels, quick replies, greeting and away messages, business profile, channels.

None of these features is touched. Many of the "limitations" lists you find online are wrong: they confuse what disappears from the app with what simply does not show up in a dashboard.

WhatsApp Business Coexistence limits

What Effect
Broadcast lists You cannot create new ones, existing ones become read only
Disappearing messages Turned off on individual chats
View once Turned off on individual chats
Live location Turned off on individual chats

If you use broadcast lists to notify clients, weigh that first. For the rest, almost nobody notices the difference.

History and requirements

When you connect you choose whether to share past chats: up to 6 months of individual messages and all contacts. Groups are not imported. You can also decline: the assistant starts anyway, without history.

You need the app updated to version 2.24.17 or later and a WhatsApp Business account already in use: Meta looks at the age and quality of the account, so a number activated yesterday may not be eligible yet.

The messages you write by hand stay free

Meta only bills messages sent through the API, meaning the assistant's replies. The ones you send from the app cost nothing and do not affect the API's 24 hour window. The full cost picture, including what changes on 1 October 2026.

If it does not convince you, you go back

Coexistence is not irreversible.

Open the WhatsApp Business app, go to Settings > Account > Business platform and tap Disconnect account. The number stops being connected to the API and you go back to using it from the app only, as before. Chats, contacts and history are not deleted.

The only trace left is administrative: the number stays associated with a business account on Meta. In everyday use it has no effect at all.

You can try the assistant for 30 days and, if it is not for you, go back in thirty seconds from your phone. That is because the account and the number are in your name, not ours. (Meta documentation)

Why it is mandatory for Wably

Many platforms do not support it: when they register your number on the API, the app on your phone stops working and everything goes through the software.

For a company with a support team that is acceptable. For a professional who replies in person between one client and the next, it is not. It is one of the reasons Wably does not go through a BSP.

If it does not convince you, you disconnect from the app in thirty seconds.
